Wongawallan is a rural community in the Gold Coast City Council area of Queensland, Australia. The landscape is mountainous, with most farming and residential development taking place in the creek valleys. The tops of the hills are entirely undeveloped.
Surveyor Dixon named the region Mount Goulburn in honor of Henry Goulburn. However, it was then renamed Wongawallan, which is said to be an Aboriginal word that combines the words wonga (pigeon) and walla (water).
It has been reported as well that it was named after an Aboriginal man known as "Peter" who killed a settler called John Wilkinson at Wongawallan Creek in 1876, although contemporaneous newspaper records just refer to the Aboriginal guy as "Peter."
Wongawallan contains several parks.
The parks around the suburb include Cresthill Drive Reserve, Eagle Heights Conservation Area, Gladrose Reserve, Hayes Park, Lanes Park, Solomon Lane Reserve, Valley View Vista Park, Welch Pioneer Park and others.
Old Tambo is a high-adrenaline run designed for experienced mountain bike riders. Fast flowing turns, rollers, dips, gaps, and a good chill out section through treed grasslands precede the tight and tricky bermed corners, drop-offs, and steep slopes that lead to the exit.
Wongawallan is about 30 minutes from Surfers Paradise and 40 minutes from Brisbane. The Fox and Hounds is the only authentic English pub on the Gold Coast, as well as the only tavern in Australia that has been moved from Tunbridge Wells, England!
