Ormeau is a Gold Coast hinterland suburb located on the Pacific Highway. It is roughly 42 kilometers north of Brisbane and 30 kilometers north of Southport. It shares a northern border with Yatala and a southern border with the Pimpama River.
The suburb’s name originally comes from Ormeau House, the estate of Major Alexander Jenyns Boyd, a sugar planter in the 1860s. Boyd's wife was born on Ormeau Road, a major south-eastern highway in Belfast, Ireland, which leads to a bridge and a park of the same name.
The term Ormeau refers to a young elm in French.
In 1878, a school was established. Only a sawmill and a school were listed in the post office directory in 1949, aside from farmers and a few banana growers. The southern Pimpama Rivers estate was built in the mid-1990s, while the elevated Ormeau Hills estate was built later in the decade.
In Ormeau, horseback riding is one of the most popular pastimes. A cricket oval and a sports facility are also located near the Shopping Village. Tennis courts may be found in a small park near the start of Ormeau Ridge Road, and extensive parkland spaces can be found throughout Old Ormeau Town and Cupania.
The Ormeau Centre, which includes a post office, doctor's office, betting, bakery, cafe, IGA, chemist, real estate agent, and newsagent, is the area's main shopping facility.
Ormeau is home to a variety of educational institutions. Ormeau Primary School, Beenleigh, Private Schools, Rivermount, Canterbury, Trinity, and Livingstone High School are just a few of them.
The suburb is home to a variety of well-known sporting teams, notably the Ormeau Shearers, a rugby league club that plays its home games at Ormeau Oval. In 2014, the Ormeau Bulldogs, a local football (AFL) team for children and masters, opened two additional ovals for use. Ormeau All Stars Football Club was founded in 2013 to meet a community need for a local soccer club.
