Merrimac is a suburb in the Gold Coast City Council area of Queensland, Australia. It is situated amid the city's central floodplains. As of March 2006, Merrimac is the site of new housing and construction developments.
The origins of the suburb's name are unknown. In 1873, Thomas Blacket Stephens bought 6,980 acres (2,820 hectares) of land, which he called Merrimac after his wife Ann. However, it was said in 1906 that the American Indian phrase for rapid-moving waterways was the inspiration for its name. It has been claimed that it was called after the Merrimack River in New England, or the USS Merrimac, a Union navy frigate named after the river.
The area was swampy at the time, but Stephens and his son William Stephens gradually drained it and turned it into productive farming land, primarily for dairying, but also for sheep, cattle, and sugarcane.
